Anyone Have an Extra Phantom of the Opera Mask?

A few weeks ago I had a cavity filled.  About a week later, the tooth next to it started bothering me, like the kind of bothering where everything is fine and then you crunch on a popcorn kernel a certain way and excrutiating fireworky pain explodes in your mouth.  So I went in to the dentist this morning, and I apparently had an air bubble in the original filling so they had to redo it.



I didn't realize it was so bad, but when I got home, Johnny couldn't stop laughing at my anesthesia job.  This is my attempt to smile.  I'm pretty much numb from my chin to my eyeball. Sigh...First World problems. 

Vegetable Aspirations

It should come as no surprise to you if you know my husband or me that we are pretty picky eaters.  I believe it comes from my dad's side of the family where we are all "allergic" to different things.  I'm allergic to tomatoes, Uncle Jeff is allergic to onions, Melody is allergic to mushrooms...the list goes on and on.

Well, after a trip to the Overland Park Farmers' Market this weekend, Johnny and I decided that we need to expand our palates, particularly our vegetable palates.  One thing that we're considering doing is joining a farming co-op.  Not the kind where you have to work on the farm, but the kind where you pay a lump sum and they deliver different fruits and veggies to you every week.  We're still up in the air on that one and it's a little late in the year, but if you know anything about those, do tell.  So what we've decided to do for the time being is pick a new, in season vegetable every week and make a few dishes with it.

For this week I turned to my new favorite website thepioneerwoman.com and tried to find a recipe that caught my eye.  After seeing a deliciously inspiring recipe for shrimp tacos, I decided that this week's vegetable would be cabbage.  I don't really know if cabbage is a vegetable, but it fits under the category of "Food that Rachel and Johnny don't really eat/try to avoid."  Other recipes for this week might include Pork Sandwiches or something you suggest?

l.ila has been working for weeks at touching the monkey hanging above her play mat.  She's also been working on her victory dance.

Two Month Photo

I can't believe it's already two months!

Ouch

Lila has had a tough couple of days.  Yesterday, while putting her in her stroller, I accidentally snapped her tummy with the buckle.  She had a look of total surprise and then sobbed while looking at me with total betrayal in her eyes.  Luckily her short term memory is bad.  Once the initial pain stopped, she looked at me and smiled, wondering why we were still in the driveway.

Today, Lila had her two month check up (Remember the monthly picture in the basket? That will happen once I fold the laundry that is currently in the basket.).  Two month check up means shots, lots of shots.  Three to be exact.  The nice nurse, who I believe has the WORST job in the world, lulled Lila into a false sense of security by giving her one of the vaccines as a yummy liquid for her to suck on.  Once Lila was done with that and happily holding my finger, the nurse jabbed her in the leg with a shot.  Lila looked surprised but was pulling through until Nurse Pain jabbed her again and then again in the other leg.  The poor baby's whole body stiffened up, turned bright red and was wracked with silent sobs.  The nurse had to rub her tummy to get her to start breathing again because she was so mad.  I had to look away because it made me cry!  

Unlike the stroller situation where she forgot it almost instantly, Lila cried all the way to the waiting room until she wore herself out and fell asleep.  She eventually shrugged it off and is currently swinging in her swing and licking her stuffed bunny's stomach.  I do apologize if you ever hold her, Lila not the bunny, because you will definitely be licked.

My Traveling Bebe

Since traveling to Texas went so well, we decided to brave the trip to Tennessee to see Johnny's sister Suzanne get commissioned into the Navy as a nurse.  Lila and Johnny dressed for the occasion.

And because we've been traveling so much, I've had a lot of good time to read some new books that I highly recommend.

Bossypants by Tina Fey was a super fun, super quick read.  She tells a lot of great stories about her experiences on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock.  I really enjoyed her writing style and wanted to read more when the book was over.

Currently, I'm in the middle of Bringing Up Bebe.  Pamela Druckerman is an American living in Paris who decides to figure out why French children are so much better behaved than American children and why French moms seem much calmer and skinnier.  She has some really funny stories but also some really interesting insights and pieces of advice.  I've already tried the French way of doing things with Lila, and it's working like a charm (two and a half hour nap in her crib this afternoon so that I could plant flowers and make pillows? yes please).

Johnny has been reading a lot too and including Lila in it.  She really likes Pilgrim's Progress and King Arthur.  Sigh, Lila is going to be sooo cool.

International Travel

Well, Lila and I survived our first trip out of the country together.  Texas was big and hot; just as I remember it.  Lila got to see her great grandparents again, meet her cousin Kate and her Aunt Annie, and dance with her granddaddy at the wedding.  I got to eat a waffle shaped like Texas.  (I'm planning to make some Kansas waffles...just use my rectangular waffle maker and take a bite out of the upper right hand corner.)

At the wedding, we made it a priority to get this four generation photo of my grandmother, my mom, myself and Lila.  Before taking this photo, my Nana informed my brother that if she fell while he was walking her down the aisle, he should just continue on and she would crawl into the nearest open pew. Way to take one for the team.

Lila loved the reception.  She danced with Mitchell and me in what I think was called the "Grand March."  It seemed to be like the Train except that it was somewhat choreographed and many people had on cowboy boots and said, "Yes ma'am," and "Yes sir."

Along with dancing on the dance floor, Lila danced the night away in her car seat.

Besides Lila having to sleep on the king sized bed with me because the Pack and Play the hotel gave us was covered in baby urine stains, it was a very successful trip and a beautiful wedding.  Lila slept on the plane the entire way home.

Now we just have to do it all over again on Friday.  Tennessee, here we come!
